Charles Holman Little

20 March 1927 - 17 March 2013
A man ahead of his time... Brenda always thought that of her dad. He wasn't the type to come home from work, grab the paper and sit down in the chair to read or to watch TV. He was in the kitchen cooking, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, out in his garden working, or tinkering with some project that he had going on in his shop- always doing whatever needed to be done. She and her siblings always mentioned that he was the one that would watch the kids when they were younger while the family was out shopping or whatever. He was a 21st century man. In the short 32+ years that I knew him, he was always very kind to me, treating me as one of his own. I felt more at home and apart of their family than I did my own, that's how comfortable I felt around him and the family.

What a life he had- not an easy one, from beginning to end. I'm surprised he turned out to be the wonderful person that he did. If anyone had a reason to complain or blame their childhood upbringing or environment, he did. His mother died when he was 3 months old, almost died as an infant, wasn't raised with his brothers and sisters as they were all passed around to different extended family members. I think he spent most of his growing up years up in the mountains in the sheep camps. At sometime in his youth, he got a cherry pit stuck in his ear which they didn't get out for a long time. But he had infections in his ear from that time until on his LDS mission in Australia, he almost died as the infection got worse. It just "happened" that one of the few surgeons that could operate on his ear was in Australia and saved his life. Of course, he would be deaf in that ear for the rest of his life. But did he complain? I don't think so, he was not that kind of man. There will be a huge void in our lives because of his absence.

It was in July or so of last year that we found out that Dad Little's cancer was getting worse, spreading into his bones. We didn't know how much time we would have with him- weeks, months, who knew. Luckily he finally got some meds that would help him manage the pain. He started hospice in the fall, but didn't have to use them too much because of the meds- he was able to do most things, but didn't have much energy to do a lot.

We were at the movies Saturday night (March 16th) and as we got out, Brenda checked her phone and saw that her mom had left a message, stating that she had better come sooner than later, as Dad was not doing well. When she got up to Richmond, her Dad was incoherent- they had been giving him morphine every 2 hours to keep the pain under control. Sunday after my bishopric and Sacrament meetings, I grabbed the kids that wanted to and headed up as well. We had been there for about 15 minutes before he journeyed on to the Spirit World. As most of the family surrounded him, we got used to the noisy oxygen machine running and his shallow breathing. It was almost deafening when his breathing got slower and slower- then stopped. And as we watched him take his last breath, Clarinda (Brenda's sister) and Mom sat on the bed beside him with their hands on his chest, feeling the last beats of his heart. It was a special time. So sad to see him go, but so glad he doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Journey back with me, a week ago Tuesday (the 12th), the day before Brenda had to go to N'arleans for work... she was running out of time to get ready and wasn't going to go up and see her parents before she left, but then decided to do it last minute. Thank goodness we went up, as it was the last time we had to be with Dad while in good spirits, was able to get around, work a bit in the kitchen with us, etc. We went for a little drive around the back roads of Richmond and towns up to the big city of Preston, ID (yahoo!). I stayed with him in the back seat and we talked whilst Brenda and her mom went shopping. It was good to be able to visit with him. We talked about a lot of stuff, mainly family. He mentioned how Brenda had asked him a few weeks earlier about getting a Father's Blessing (which he did and was great to witness). He chuckled and said, "now all the kids want one!" I don't think that ever happened for them which is too bad- we didn't think he's go this fast. He also mentioned that his hospice nurses had told him that they had other patients with his illness and was surprised how much longer he had lasted and that he should have died 6 months ago. I asked him what he attributed that to and he said, "prayers"... there have been many sent up in his behalf for sure. He mentioned what a special girl Brenda is. I told him I was so lucky to have her (so true- she is amazing!) Then on Thursday, he turned for the worst. Mom had to start him on the morphine because of so much pain. Friday she had to call in the nurse and help him get into bed, etc- the pain was too much. Then Saturday, afternoon, he visited with couple of family members, thanking them for the visit and those were his last words.

The viewing/funeral was Friday night the 22nd, and Saturday the 23rd. It was a great service- there were a lot of people that came to pay their respects. He had touched so many lives and done so much for so many. Brenda and her sibs did a great tribute to him. Brenda talked on how she sees special traits in each sibling that they got from their dad. I was asked to give the Grave Dedication... quite an honor- and my first.

What a great and special man- he will be missed. But, it's not the end. I am so glad to know that through our Savior, Jesus Christ, that we'll be able to see and be with him again! This gives me the hope and strength to keep going, through all the "stuff" that happens. How sad for those that choose not to accept and try to understand that truth. Why wouldn't you want to?

Just a bit of lightness in the whole thing- I was thinking before I went up on the Sunday he passed away, that he better not die on St. Patrick's Day (when I got up there, Brenda told me that her mom had said the same thing). She's Scottish you see...

Dad, we love you and will miss you for a season...

Sandy Ego

We've been thinking about taking Dad down to San Diego to stay at my sister Laraine's house for a while. I've never been able to convince Dad that it would be a good idea, enjoyable to get out of the snow and cold... he's complaining that he can't get outside to do any walking. He just does the Eeyore , "no, I'm OK. Don't worry about me...". I brought it up again last week, I mentioned that Brenda and I were thinking about going down to SD cause we had some business to take care of, and wondered if he might like to come along. Well, he perked right up and thought that he might like that. It's interesting how his mind works now. I think he had a pretty good time down there. He went on several walks...one was when B and I were gone to take care of some business, Sydney stayed with him and he wanted to go out for a stroll. On the loop, there is a steep hill that he has to stop several times... she kept thinking to herself, "what if he collapses? what do I do?" Luckily, we came driving around the corner and picked them up. Hey, if he goes, at least he goes doing something that he likes, right? We also went to the ocean and hung out there a bit, saw Brenda's niece Krista and her family, we saw some old friends from when we lived in Seattle- the Romeros. They live on quite a nice spread, but it's heck and gone from SD- out in the sticks, but oh so nice. It was good to visit with them and compare "war wounds". They are just some of God's "salt of the earth" people, he was up as a possible candidate for the new stake presidency (it was just reorganized, but he didn't get in- will probably next time when they split the stake), so he'll just stay as a bishop (!). He said, "did you ever think 20 years ago, to look forward, would you think that you'd have these kind of family problems?" It just goes to show you, you can be the best you can be, try to do what's right, try to be a good example, blah, blah, blah, but your kids ultimately make their own choices- as tough as it is for us to allow that to happen! It's just so hard to see your kids going through "stuff" when it would be so much easier if they would just do what they're suppose to! Oh well, it's the Lord's plan and we're gonna just stick with it and do the best we can! It just happened to be Brendr's birthday as well whilst we were there- man, what a treat! I mean, who can say that they got to go to San Diego for their 51st birthday? And when it was just going to be a romantic working vacation for the two of us, Dad decided to go, and we made the mistake of telling Sydney and we got to bring her along as well- yippee! Now, a birthday just can't get better than that...can it? To pilfer a line from Carlos... "...you're my reason for reason, the step in my groove..." Happy Birthday, my Love.

Here are a few pix.

Sydney, Brenda, and Doug with an original member of the Mormon Battalion.... well, almost.

He volunteered... they had to take him. How do you know he wasn't the comic relief? And Mom didn't think he'd amount to anything...

Rochelle, Steve, Brendr, Jerry, and Sydney at the beach. The weather was great... about 70 degrees. The water, not so nice... about 40 probably. Well, after all, it's still winter you know.

2013- Happy New Year

Well, it's been quite a week with Christmas, our anniversary, and now the new year. I've got a few pix to show, so hang on.

Christmas
Christmas Eve, we traveled up to Richmond to Brenda's parents. It had started to snow (the weatherpeople had predicted it to snow about 10 days ago... they got it right!
It was nice, just in time for Christmas) and we were concerned about making it through the mountain pass. We decided to try it, as they were really wanting us to come up. The roads weren't too bad until we got to the pass (Sardine Canyon). Carson said we were going to die and that we should turn around right then... it was quite hilarious. We just took our time, and yes, we did make it without death or injury.
We had a nice dinner with them and they wondered if we should stay over night. Well, the boys said, "We chanced coming up here, we can chance going home, too". Sillies. It was a rather quiet day as Christmas goes.
Rory, in South Korea, had already had Christmas of course... he had a get together with other GI Joes and Janes, a gift exchange... said it was nice. Madison, Jake and Isla had gone down to AZ to his parents for the holiday, so we only had Taylor (we had Emery for a couple days a few days earlier), Sydney, and Carson.
After opening presents, we went and got gpa Z next door to have breakfast with us, took him home and then we got ready to go to the Les Miserables movie- ah, what an awesome movie.
We'd seen the play a couple times, but this was just in your face. Oh my goodness, we ran out of hankies. Good thing the lights were down low- we were all crying like little girls. It was a very nice day- Merry Christmas.

Anniversary #32
We did our annual trek down to Salt Lake for our anniversary. One of these years we've got to get away... maybe next year  :)   We went to Ruth's Chris steak house- oh my goodness, the steaks were fabulous, as well as the sweet potato casserole. The chef even gave us a dessert for our anniversary- how nice, then the bill came... good gravy!
Good thing our anniversary is just once a year... also, good thing Brenda got a gift card from her work to help pay for some of it. It was a lot of food, so we decided to eat just half so we could enjoy it again tomorrow- gosh the staff there was so nice! I can't wait to go again.

The next day, we did some shopping and went to a movie. During that time, I was starting to wonder if we put our steaks in the trunk, as I knew they would stay cold enough. We then realized that we left our $$$ steaks in the refrigerator at the hotel- dang!
We called and they had already thrown it all away- our steaks, our anniversary drink we were too full to drink, my Havarti-dill cheese that Santa left in my sock for Christmas. Oh well, I guess someone else needed them more than us.

At church on Sunday, our anniversary date, we were talking to the bishop's wife and family and Brenda mentioned that it was our anniversary day today and that it had been 32 years of bliss. The bishop's wife said, "My mom and dad got a divorce after 32 years of marriage. I said, "Brenda, can we at least still have dinner after church?" Kinda funny. Well, we had a good run.

Happy New Year!
New Year's Eve was fun. We had a slim dinner (brought gpa Z over for that as well) and started getting all the party food ready. We prepared chicken wings, shrimp, meatballs, chocolate fondue with bananas, marshmallows, pretzels, pound cake, fresh strawberries and pineapple... oh goodness we pigged out- it was great. We played games, ate food, played more games and ate more. The we popped open the bubbly (unleaded of course), brought in the new year, played a few more games and went to bed. I had a great time.

While Brenda and I were on our anniversary getaway, I had been shopping for a coat as she doesn't like the ones I wear (they all have former employers' names on them). Found some I liked, but couldn't pull the trigger and put down the money. Well yesterday, Brenda found out that the one I liked was going to be half price on New Year's Day! So, we headed down to SLC to Dillards. Got there right at 10:00 when they opened. The parking lot was full- no way I was going to get the coat. I could not believe the people! Unbelievable! There were lines everywhere... they had a long line just to get on the escalator to go up to the next floor! It was a great sale though, 50% off (which my coat was as well- it was still there!) just about everything. Of course we ended up buying much more than my coat... so, did we save? You've got to spend to save, right? Not the best way to spend the day off though, but it was for a good cause I guess.

There has much doom and gloom in the news of late, it's true, but we have to have hope. If we don't have hope, we have despair. So, even though things could be better, they could sure still be worse. Hey, I'm choosing to be an optimistic guy- I'm a person that looks at the glass 1/4 full!   :)

I leave you with a couple of pix, proof that there are angels living among us (made by two angels that live with us- Madison and wee lass Isla).
A Happy and Prosperous New Year to all!

End Of The World

Well, I guess it didn't happen... the end of the world. But, that's ok, didn't have time for the end of the world anyway, I had a lot of Christmas shopping to do. And if I don't get that done, it WILL be the end of the world.

I do love this shortest day/longest night business, though. Every year, I tell the family that after this day, the days start to get longer. Always gives me hope that sometime, things will "spring" back to life and the days will get warmer. Now, that would mean something if it had been really cold and if there was a lot of snow. We've had much of neither. It usually happens that Mother Nature waits to give us all of our snow in the spring so she can freeze our fruit trees. What do you do, you don't mess with Mother Nature.

Happy Winter everyone!

A Moment Frozen in Time

Well, it happened. Remember the other day when it was the 12th of December of 2012? Well, I've got the moment captured in time- frozen, if you will...   12 Dec of 2012, at 12:12:12pm... that would be 12/12/12 @ 12:12:12. Isn't that cool! Something like that will never happen again!

P.S.... shhhh, but don't tell anyone, but it's really like every other second in time that will never happen again... LOL!

To Tweeze Or Not

It's the little things in life... don't you think?

You know when you're standing in front of the bathroom mirror, tears streaming down your face... no, not from the reflection of the aging, sagging, bulging mass in front of you, but from "tweezing" those pesky little nose hairs! Dang I hate that- nothing worse in the world. I know it ranks right up there with child birth- women just have no idea. Anyway, my girls have been after me to go get my nose waxed... are you kidding me? "It doesn't even hurt" they say. Yeah, right. Have they "tweezed" a nose hair? I think not, else they'd not even suggest such a torture. Can you imagine plucking the whole wad at once? One is bad enough! Well, Brenda tricked me the other night when we were on our way home from our date. "Let's stop and see Madison on our way home" she says. OK, no problem, I like to see my girl at work (she is the receptionist at a cosmetology school). They had it all set up for the "yanking of the hairs". After having the "hot wax on-a-stick" shoved up each nostril (one at a time... but I was wondering if that's how the pharaohs of old felt when being mummified- getting those hot pokers shoved up the nose to scramble those brains...), then had to wait for about 5 minutes for the wax to harden. The cosmetologist-in-training said, "are you ready?" No, I like sticks in my nose... she put one hand on my forehead and grabbed that stick and pulled quickly... BAM- done! I couldn't believe it... no tears! The stick looked like an unfinished Tootsie-Pop that's been under your bed for years. I can't wait for my nose hairs to grow so I can go again. Now, I wonder if they do ears, hmmmmm. :D

Thankful... part III

The day before Thanksgiving I was running a bit late for work. I think I was stopped by every light on the way. "Isn't it ironic... don't ya think? I'm grateful for red lights that let others get to work safely... :(

...but, when I got to work, the owner came around in the morning and handed out fresh $20 bills to everyone. I am thankful for dead presidents (and other cool dead guys- Ben, being one of my favorites)... :D     "Are you on the list? No, but I believe my friends are, perhaps you know them... Franklin, Grant, and JJJJJJackson?"
